Hearing Aid Grants Information

Services to help with hearing loss are provided through the HSE by audiologists, general practitioners or consultant ENT (ear, nose and throat) surgeons.

Hearing aids help to amplify sound, making it loud enough for you to hear. If you have a medical card or belong to the eligible groups mentioned below, you can obtain your hearing aid free of charge. If you do not have a medical card, North West Hearing Clinic can supply you with a hearing aid to suit you.

Services can be provided free of charge to certain people, including:

· Medical Card holders and their dependants

· People with Hepatitis C who contracted the disease through the use of blood products within Ireland and who have a Health Amendment Act Card

· Preschool children and national school children referred from child health service and school health service examinations

If you do not have a medical card, the Treatment Benefit Scheme will cover you and your dependent spouse if you have enough social insurance contributions for some ofthe cost of hearing aids.

Treatment Benefit Scheme

The Treatment Benefit scheme is a scheme operated by the Department of Social Protection. Under this scheme, contributions made by people to the national social insurance fund are paid back to fund the cost of certain health benefits.

These health benefits include dental benefit, optical benefit and Hearing Aids. The Department of Social and Family Affairs will pay up to €500 towards the  (1000 per pair) cost of a hearing aid or half the cost of a repair to a hearing aid, subject to a fixed maximum contribution.

Applying for Treatment Benefit

You must satisfy certain conditions regarding payment of PRSI in order to qualify for Treatment Benefit. You must apply to the Department of Social Protection for approval by completing the appropriate application form.

"Hearing what my customers say"

North West Hearing Clinic Awarded Silver Accessibility Award

Audiologist Pádraig MacGinty who owns North West Hearing Clinic has been awarded a Silver Change a Little Change a Lot Accessibility Award for his commitment to change.

“Being in business 14 years and working on a daily basis with individuals with hearing impairment, I am very well aware of how important being an accessibility-friendly business is.”

Based in Letterkenny with mobile hearing clinics in Dungloe and Inishowen, North West Hearing Clinic serves the population of Donegal with hearing impairment.

Pádraig says, “I entered the Change a Little Change a Lot Awards to ensure that we are accessible to everyone with a disability and not just those with a hearing impairment. I have learned so much through this process and am really very proud that I have committed to change and can welcome more individuals through my door as a result.”

The North West Hearing Clinic experience comprises state of the art technology coupled with expert diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. With a patient centred ethos North West Hearing Clinic is committed to standards of excellence in patient care, competitive product pricing, free hearing tests and a reliable and free after care service.

North West Hearing Clinic now also provides accessible information in alternative formats on request. An induction loop system operates throughout the premises. Accessibility to the premises and services are now advertised via the Clinic website. Plus a new system is being developed to directly target clients with multiple disabilities.

Disability and equality training among all staff has helped increase awareness on different communication needs to help ensure staff recognise specific requirements, empowering them to respond confidently and appropriately. Improvements are also being made to the delivery of services for home visits, which are arranged for the convenience of some clients. Finally a development plan for physical access to the building to increase accessibility is in place.

Opening Hours

North West Hearing Clinic operates from Riverside Retail Park, Neil T. Blaney Road, Letterkenny, Monday to Friday 9.30am – 5.00pm and are closed for lunch from 1.00pm – 2.00pm.
